The overarching goal of the SCSCB is to increase the capacity of Caribbean ornithologists, resource managers, conservation organizations, institutions, and local citizens to conserve the birds of the Caribbean and their habitats. We aim to achieve this by 1) developing regional conservation projects, activities, and materials that facilitate local research, management, conservation, education and outreach, and 2) Building networks and partnerships with local, national and international organizations and institutions that share our bird conservation goals.
The Society holds a week-long biennial meeting, has a number of active Working Groups and Programs and publishes The Journal of Caribbean Ornithology and two bi-annual newsletters. With assistance from the US Fish and Wildlife Service, SCSCB also sponsors the publication of local bird field guides. The society works to raise public awareness, knowledge and appreciation of the value of the region’s many endemic bird species and their habitats through two flagship programs: the Caribbean Endemic Bird Festival and the West Indian Whistling-Duck and Wetlands Conservation Project. SCSCB also raises awareness about migratory birds through celebration of International Migratory Bird Day.
The goals of the SCSCB are to:SCSCB is staffed and run by volunteers. The Board consists of 11 members - the Executive, Directors-at-Large, and editor of JCO. At present, the society has about 300 members representing 23 territories or islands in the Caribbean.
The aim of the society's week-long biennial meeting is to facilitate contact among ornithologists, resource managers, and interested citizens in order to encourage and stimulate avian conservation efforts within the host country and throughout the region. The meetings are also used as a forum to run important and relevant training workshops on topics related to avian conservation, management, and research. Our last meeting was in San Juan, Puerto Rico, July 19-23, 2007, our next meeting will be in Antigua, July 15-18, 2009 - click here for information about this meeting.
